Provided by Mark Blackwell. 1940: Greenville Pickens Speedway is built as a dirt track; 1956: The Blackwell family buys the track; 1970: The dirt track is paved; 1971: The speedway hosts the first start-to-finish live, televised NASCAR race; 2003: Kevin Whitaker buys the track Webb1788, SC became a state. The state government was moved from Charleston to Columbia in 1790, although some functions remained at Charleston until after the Civil War. 1860, SC was the first state to secede from the Union. 1868, SC was readmitted to the Union. Districts were now called counties. 1785, Abbeville County & County Court established.
